Our 4th of July was pretty uneventful until Saturday night. We all slept in which usually that never happens. I couldn't believe it when I woke up and it was 9:30am! We all finally rolled out of bed around 10am and before we knew it the day was whipping by. That's what happens when you wake up so late! So since Em woke up late that made for a late nap time. It kind of worked out good since we were planning on going to watch fireworks. She slept from 3-6pm, and then we grilled burgers for dinner. After that we headed to Okemos to watch the Meridian Township fireworks and check out the different events that were going on. Festivities were from 7-11pm, but by the time we got there it wasn't until about 8:45pm so it was already getting busy. We found a spot to watch the fireworks and set up our chairs and blanket before we headed to the activities. (Ours is the yellow blanket.)
There were lots of activities which included, a children's area with giant bounce houses, a firetruck & ambulance to view, hospital helicopter tour, paddleboat rides, classic car show, live music, and more! Here is Evan taking a turn sitting in the fire truck. He loves fire trucks!
The Meridian Township fire department had an area where kids could try out a real fire hose and aim it at a target. Evan thought this was really cool!
There was also a playground at the site so of course the kids had to check it out. Here they are racing down the slide!
We didn't get to do everything because some stuff shut down early. Hopefully if we go next year we can get there earlier and do more things. While we waited for the big firework show to start there were many people doing sparklers and small fireworks. Em was loving them and kept saying, "what's this?" She thought they were pretty cool. Then the big fireworks started and she wasn't liking them so much. It was the big "boom" part that she didn't like. (She was starting to get really tired too since it was way past her bedtime, but she hung in there and was a real trooper!) She quickly jumped up on my lap and tried to hide. She had to grab the blanket we had laid out and snuggle with it too. After a few minutes she got a little used to it, but she wouldn't get off my lap. She kept her face hidden and every once in awhile she'd try to peek at them. A couple times when she was looking I would ask her if she saw pretty sparkles in the sky and she'd say, "yes." So I think she kind of liked them, but the noise was too loud for her. Evan on the other hand was loving them! He thought they were really cool, and of course was ready for more and more and more! We had a nice evening although we got eaten alive by the mosquitoes even with the bug spray on. My poor little girl woke up with about 15 bites! Must be since she so sweet, the mosquitoes loved her the best! Here's a shot of the spectacular views in the sky at the firework show!
